IUI – this is how it works

IUI treatment with us is carried out in a natural cycle. This means that you will be scheduled for treatment as soon as the ovulation test shows a positive result.

On the day of the insemination, we generally allocate 1 hour for the treatment with donor sperm and 2 hours for the treatment with partner sperm.

The process on the day of IUI treatment includes the following 3 steps.

The insemination process

It is important that the insemination treatment is carried out at the right time. That’s why we always perform an ultrasound scan before the IUI treatment.

During the scan, we measure your follicles and the lining of the uterus. This ensures that the IUI treatment is not carried out too early.

If you would like a scan in the days leading up to presumed ovulation, please contact us so we can arrange a time for this.

We can also offer follicle scanning for women who are trying to conceive at home.

The insemination itself lasts just a few minutes and is usually completely painless.

We insert a sterile catheter through the cervix and directly into the uterus, where the purified sperm is placed close to the fallopian tube.

The treatment will feel like a gynaecological examination.

After the insemination procedure, you can rest for approximately 15 minutes to allow your body to relax.

During this time, we offer acupuncture treatment, which helps relax the muscles and promotes increased blood flow to the uterus. This can positively influence the effectiveness of the IUI treatment. You can find our acupuncture treatment prices in the price list.

Our staff have been trained by midwife and acupuncturist Christina Klok, who runs her own clinic specialising in acupuncture for fertility treatments and pregnancy.

Feedback on the IUI treatment

After the insemination procedure, we will provide you with a pregnancy test, which should be taken 14 days after the treatment.

We understand that the waiting period before taking the pregnancy test can feel long and be filled with a range of emotions. This is completely natural, as you are waiting for news that could change your life.

If the pregnancy test is negative, don’t lose hope. It is entirely normal for multiple attempts to be needed before achieving pregnancy. You can view our pregnancy success rates here.

As we are required to report all treatment outcomes to the Danish Health Authority, it is very important that you inform us of the result, whether the treatment was successful or not.

Insemination (IUI) in your natural cycle

Open 365 days a year

At Diers Klinik, we prioritise performing IUI treatments during your natural cycle, eliminating the need for hormonal treatment.

If you have a regular menstrual cycle and can test for ovulation, there is typically no need for hormone treatment, provided you are otherwise healthy.

To ensure that all women can undergo treatment in their natural cycle, our clinic is open 365 days a year for IUI procedures.

This allows you to wait for a positive ovulation test in peace, without worrying about clinic closures.

When you ovulate, we are always ready to provide treatment, including on weekends and public holidays.
