Becoming a single mother by choice in Denmark

In Denmark, fertility treatment is available to single women, and we have been helping women become mothers with donor sperm for many years.

At Diers, we believe that the wish to become a parent is what matters – not whether you have a partner.

We welcome women from across Europe and around the world, regardless of nationality or country of residence.

Under Danish legislation, fertility treatment must be completed before your 46th birthday. Your individual suitability for treatment will be assessed according to the treatment you are considering.

What fertility treatments are available for single women?

At Diers, we offer both IUI and IVF treatment using donor sperm.

The most suitable option depends on your age, fertility history, ovarian reserve and individual circumstances.

IUI – Insemination with donor sperm

IUI is a simple fertility treatment where carefully prepared donor sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation.

IUI may be suitable if you have regular ovulation, open fallopian tubes and no known fertility problems that would make insemination less appropriate.

For women travelling from abroad, IUI can be particularly convenient because the procedure itself only requires a short visit to our clinic.

Getting started with IUI is straightforward

You begin with a free online consultation with our IUI team. During this conversation, we will explain the treatment, review your circumstances and guide you through the necessary preparations.

Once your consultation is completed and the required test results and documents are in place, we can plan your insemination.

You can monitor your ovulation at home and contact us when your ovulation test becomes positive, so we can arrange the timing of your treatment.

IVF-treatment with donor sperm

IVF may be recommended depending on your age, medical history, previous treatments or other fertility-related factors.

During IVF treatment, your ovaries are stimulated with hormone medication to encourage several eggs to develop.

The eggs are collected at our clinic and fertilised with donor sperm in our laboratory.

The fertilised eggs are then cultured to the blastocyst stage, usually over five to six days.

A suitable blastocyst can be transferred to your uterus, and any additional suitable blastocysts can be frozen for future treatment.

Preparation for IVF

For IVF, your preparations include an initial online consultation with our coordination team and after we have received your medical test results and examinations, you will have a consultation with one of our fertility doctors.

Your doctor will review the medical information and prepare your individual treatment plan.

Prepare for your fertility treatment from home

We understand that travelling to another country for fertility treatment requires planning, especially when balancing work, family and everyday life.

That is why we have made it possible to complete the initial preparations from your home country.

Step 1 – Start with a free online consultation

Your journey begins with a free, non-binding online consultation with our team.

During this conversation, we will talk about your wishes, medical history and the different treatment options available.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions about treatment, donor selection, costs and the practical arrangements.

Your initial consultation is generally the only consultation needed before we can begin planning your treatment, provided all necessary examinations and documents are in place.

You do not need to complete medical tests before booking your first consultation.

Your initial consultation is followed by a medical consultation with one of our fertility doctors, who will assess your medical information and prepare your treatment plan.

You do not need to complete medical tests before booking your first consultation.

Step 2 – Complete your medical examinations at home

Before treatment, certain blood tests and medical examinations are required.

The necessary investigations depend on whether you are planning IUI or IVF.

These may include hormone tests, infectious disease screening and ultrasound examinations.

You can generally arrange these tests with a local doctor, gynaecologist or medical laboratory in your home country.

Simply send us the results, and our team will guide you through the next steps.

Step 3 – Plan your treatment

You can plan your treatment from home and are always welcome to reach out if you have any questions regarding your preparations.

Once you have completed your initial consultation and submitted the necessary documents and test results, we can begin planning your insemination.

Our IUI team will explain how to monitor your ovulation at home and when to contact the clinic.

The insemination is scheduled according to your positive ovulation test, so some flexibility with your travel arrangements is important.

After your initial consultation and preliminary examinations, you will have an online consultation with one of our fertility doctors.

Your doctor will review your medical history and test results and prepare your individual treatment plan.

This includes ovarian stimulation, medication, ultrasound monitoring and the expected timing of egg retrieval.

You may be able to begin ovarian stimulation and undergo the initial ultrasound monitoring in your home country before travelling to Denmark.

Step 4 – Choose your sperm donor

Choosing a sperm donor is a very personal decision, and we want you to have the time and information you need.

Through our own sperm bank, Diers Selected, you can browse carefully screened donor profiles online.

You can explore photographs, physical characteristics, personal descriptions, interests and background information.

Our donors undergo medical and genetic screening before being approved.

We also offer GeneMatch, an optional genetic compatibility test that compares your genetic information with your selected donor across approximately 420 genes.

You are welcome to ask our team for guidance before purchasing donor sperm.

Step 5 – Travel to Denmark for treatment

Once your preparations are complete, we will help you determine when you need to travel.

The length of your stay depends on whether you are having IUI or IVF and which treatment approach is most appropriate for you.

How long do you need to stay in Denmark?

For IUI treatment

IUI itself is a short procedure, and many international patients only need to visit Denmark for the insemination.

Because treatment is timed around ovulation, it is important to be flexible with your travel arrangements.

We will guide you on how to monitor your ovulation from home and when to contact us.

IUI step by step

For IVF with fresh embryo transfer

If you have your initial stimulation monitoring and ultrasound scans performed in your home country, you should plan to stay in Denmark for at least 7–9 days.

This covers the period from your final ultrasound examination before egg retrieval until your fresh embryo transfer.

If you prefer to have all your ultrasound scans performed at our clinic, we recommend planning a stay of approximately 14 days.

Embryo transfer

For IVF with frozen embryo transfer

If you would prefer to separate egg retrieval and embryo transfer, we can also offer a freeze-all approach.

In this case, your eggs are retrieved and fertilised, and any suitable blastocysts are frozen rather than transferred immediately.

You can return home once you are medically fit to travel after egg retrieval.

You would then plan a second visit to Denmark for your frozen embryo transfer in a later cycle.

You’re not alone in choosing a sperm donor

For many single women, choosing a sperm donor is one of the most important decisions on their journey to motherhood.

At Diers Selected, we believe you should have the opportunity to get to know the person behind the donation.

Our donor profiles provide information about personality, interests, appearance and background.

Our donor screening process includes medical history across three generations, medical examinations, genetic testing, infectious disease screening and semen quality assessment.

We offer ID-release donors, allowing donor-conceived children to request identifying information about their donor under the applicable rules when they reach the relevant age.

Personal care, even when you’re far from home

Travelling abroad for fertility treatment can bring both excitement and uncertainty.

At Diers, you will meet a small, dedicated team who work closely together throughout your treatment.

For IUI, your primary contact will be our IUI team, who will guide you from your first consultation through the planning and timing of your insemination.

For IVF, you will first meet our coordination team, followed by a consultation with one of our fertility doctors. During treatment, you will communicate with our treatment team and meet both a doctor and a member of the team for your egg retrieval and embryo transfer.

Although we cannot promise the same contact person at every step, our teams communicate closely and work together to provide continuity of care.

We know how important it is to feel welcome, especially when travelling to another country for something as personal as fertility treatment.

What happens when you return home?

After your treatment, we will provide guidance on pregnancy testing and the next steps, including medication instructions where relevant.

For IVF, a pregnancy blood test can be performed in your home country approximately ten days after embryo transfer.

For IUI, a pregnancy test is normally taken 14 days after insemination.

You can send your result to us, and we will guide you regarding the next steps.

If pregnancy is achieved, further pregnancy examinations and ultrasound scans will be carried out by your local doctor or healthcare provider.

You are always welcome to contact us with questions related to your treatment, even after returning home.
