Donor egg IVF – what is it?

In egg donation IVF treatment, a woman receives an unfertilised egg from a donor. The egg is then fertilised in the laboratory using either her partner’s sperm or donor sperm.

This treatment is often the best option for women who cannot use their own eggs, either because they are not viable or because their quality is too poor to result in a successful pregnancy.

Egg donation is also a suitable choice for women who carry a genetic condition they wish to avoid passing on to their child.

Egg donation treatment in brief

In an egg donation process, the egg donor undergoes hormonal stimulation and egg retrieval.

Since egg banking is not permitted in Denmark, unfertilised eggs from donors cannot be stored. Therefore, an egg donation process only begins once there is a recipient ready to receive the donated eggs.

After the egg retrieval, the eggs are fertilised in the laboratory. We can use either the partner’s sperm or donor sperm from a sperm bank. In the laboratory, the fertilised eggs are carefully monitored as they develop. After 5-6 days, they reach the blastocyst stage, at which point they are ready for transfer to the uterus.

If you are considering IVF with donor eggs, the following provides an overview of the process.

IVF treatment course with donated eggs

This is the step-by-step process.

The first step is to book an initial consultation. The consultation is free and non-binding. You can book a consultation here.

Before starting treatment, the woman – and the man if partner sperm is being used – must undergo certain examinations and tests.

Most preliminary tests can be carried out by your local gynaecologist and test laboratory if you live abroad. Read about preliminary tests and examinations.

Once we have received all test results, you will be scheduled for an online consultation with our fertility doctor. The doctor will explain the next steps of the treatment and answer any questions you may have.

For egg donation treatment using partner sperm, the male partner must schedule an appointment at the clinic to provide a sperm sample. The sample will be frozen before the egg retrieval.

If you are undergoing a double donation IVF treatment, you will need to select the sperm donor you wish to use. Access more details about finding a sperm donor.

You will get access to our large donor catalogue. Here you can view detailed profiles of our egg donors and register for the donors who best match your preferences. The more donors you register for, the sooner you can expect to receive an offer for a donation. Uncover insights about finding an egg donor.

The egg donor will receive hormone treatment prior to the egg retrieval. We will follow the development of the follicles using ultrasound scanning. When the time is right we will perform the egg retrieval.
Afterwards our skilled embryologists will fertilise the eggs in the laboratory with the thawed partner or donor sperm. And the eggs will develop to blastocysts over the next days.
5-6 days after fertilisation, we will know how many blastocysts you have received from the treatment, and you will be notified.
Before the embryo transfer, the woman undergoes preparation to optimise the chances of a successful pregnancy. This involves hormone treatment, with our medical team providing prescriptions and detailed instructions on which hormones to take and when.

On the day of the embryo transfer, the blastocyst is placed inside the uterus using a small catheter. At the same time, we will perform an ultrasound scan to ensure that the blastocyst is placed perfectly.

The embryo transfer is a simple procedure and is completely painless for most women. Understand more about frozen embryo transfer.

10 days after the egg transfer, we will measure your hCG level, which tells us if you are pregnant or not. We know the wait can be long, but as soon as the result is available, we will contact you so you know what to do next – regardless of the result.

Finding an egg donor

At Diers IVF, you can explore detailed profiles of our egg donors in our large egg donor catalogue. You can then register for the ones that best suit your preferences. The more donors you register for, the sooner you can expect to receive an offer for a donation.

Extended donor profiles

In the egg donor profiles you can read in-depth information about the individual egg donor.

In addition to basic information such as height, weight, ethnicity, hair and eye colour, the profiles also include personal details about the egg donor’s personality, hobbies, education, job, family history etc. as well as pictures of her as a child. Many profiles also include a Staff impression, which is our staff’s description of the donor, and a personal letter from the donor.

You can choose between open (contactable) and closed (non-contactable) egg donors. Read more about finding an egg donor.
