Find a sperm donor

Choosing the right sperm donor is an important and deeply personal choice.

Sperm donors are ordinary people with both strengths and weaknesses – just like all of us.

So, the choice is not about finding the perfect donor. It is about selecting a sperm donor that feels right for you.

Finding a sperm donor is a personal choice

We all have unique personal stories and backgrounds, with values and needs that can differ significantly.

This is why it is important to reflect on what truly matters to you when choosing a sperm donor.

Systemise your donor selection

The wide range of sperm donors can feel overwhelming, and it’s easy to get lost in all the information.

That is why we recommend taking a systematic approach to finding a sperm donor:

  1. Choose 3-4 factors in the list that are most important to you in your donor selection.
  2. Use sorting functions and other tools to narrow down donors that meet your key criteria.
  3. Once you have narrowed down the selection: review the available information on each donor and read their donor profiles, if available.
  4. Finally, narrow your options to the 2-4 donors who feel like the best match for you.

Always select more than one donor, as sperm donors can sell out quickly.

Especially for IUI treatments, having alternatives is helpful. We recommend changing donor if 3-4 treatments have not resulted in pregnancy.

List of selection factors

To help guide your decision, here are examples of factors and considerations you might reflect on when finding a sperm donor:

The amount of information you can get about sperm donors varies. Do you want detailed information about the donor, which you can get if the donor has a donor profile? Or do you prefer only basic information, such as ethnicity, height, hair/eye colour?

Do you want a closed (non-contactable) sperm donor or an open (contactable) sperm donor? Read more about the donor categories.

If it’s important to you that the donor resembles you or your partner, factors such as height, eye colour, hair colour, ethnicity, and childhood photos can play a significant role in your decision.

Many people put a lot of emphasis on childhood photos when choosing a sperm donor. This is understandable, but it can mean overlooking a potentially better match. By focusing less on baby photos and more on other factors that are important to you, we believe you’ll find the best selection of sperm donors.

Does the donor’s education, profession, or career aspirations matter to you? These details are typically available in the donor profiles and can help inform your choice.

For some, a donor’s personality traits and hobbies can be crucial. It might be important to see a reflection of your own talents and passions in the donor, especially if they share interests or activities that you deeply value.

Many sperm banks ask their staff to write a short description of what they consider to be particularly characterising and unique about the donor in question. Do you value such a description?

Do you need specific information about the sperm donor’s health, such as

If you want to have donor sperm for future siblings and possibly for multiple treatments, make sure there are enough units of donor sperm available. The units can be stored in a sperm storage until you need them.

Donor sperm prices have increased in recent years, and we know that for many people there is also a financial aspect to consider when finding a sperm donor. The following can affect the price of donor sperm:

  • Anonymity and donor profile: Open sperm donors with a donor profile are often more expensive than closed sperm donors without a profile.
  • Limitations on the number of families: Donors restricted to one or a few families often come at a higher cost compared to donors available to a larger number of families.
