Professional and personal experience with fertility treatment and donation

In addition to more than 20 years of experience with fertility treatment, Liza has extensive professional expertise in sperm donation, egg donation and donor selection. Among other things, she co-founded an international sperm bank.

Liza takes part in the public debate on equal access to fertility treatment and the perspectives of donor-conceived people.

As the mother of three donor-conceived children, Liza combines her professional and leadership experience with personal insight into choosing a donor and building a family through donation.

From midwife to founder of a fertility clinic

Liza qualified as a midwife from the School of Midwifery in Aalborg in 2005.

The following year, she founded Diers Fertility Clinic in Aarhus. At the time, single women and lesbian couples did not have the same access to fertility treatment as they do today.

Liza therefore wanted to establish a clinic where the chance of getting help was not determined by family type or sexual orientation.

The wish to make fertility treatment accessible to more people is still a core part of Diers’ values.

Liza Diers’ professional experience

Since Diers Fertility Clinic was founded, Liza has worked to develop and offer fertility treatment to single people and couples from Denmark and abroad.

Liza’s main professional areas are:

  • IUI and fertility treatment with donor sperm
  • establishing and developing a fertility clinic that offer IUI, IVF and treatment with donor eggs
  • establishing and developing processes for donor recruitment, donor selection and screening within the applicable regulatory framework
  • establishing and developing sperm banks
  • advising single people, couples and LGBTQ+ families on fertility treatment and donor selection
  • public debate and communication on access to fertility treatment, fertility discrimination and patient involvement
  • professional and experience-based communication on the perspectives of donor-conceived children, donor siblings and donor parents

The specific medical, genetic, embryological and laboratory assessments and treatments are carried out by the clinic’s relevant specialists.

Founder and owner of Diers Klinik and Diers IVF

Liza is the founder and owner of Diers Fertility Clinic, which consists of two companies, Diers Klinik ApS and Diers IVF ApS.

Together, the two companies form the framework for Diers’ fertility treatments:

  • Diers Klinik offers, among other things, IUI with partner sperm or donor sperm from the clinic’s own sperm bank, Diers Selected.
  • Diers IVF offers, among other things, IVF, ICSI, fertility treatment with donor eggs and social freezing.

Liza’s role covers founding, ownership, strategic development and upholding the values that Diers is built on.

Co-founder of SellmerDiers Sperm Bank

In 2017, Liza co-founded the sperm bank SellmerDiers. The sperm bank grew into an international company with branches in Aarhus, Aalborg and Copenhagen.

Her work with SellmerDiers gave Liza extensive experience in establishing and developing a sperm bank, including donor recruitment, donor selection, donor profiles and advising future parents on choosing a donor.

A key focus of the work at SellmerDiers was to limit, and be transparent about, how many families each donor could help create.

SellmerDiers became the first sperm bank in Denmark to introduce a global family limit for all donors – a single limit across countries. The aim was to limit the number of families with children from the same donor, and thereby also the number of genetic half-siblings. Openness about donors’ family limits remains an area Liza actively works for.

Another key focus was to give future parents access to more nuanced information about the donors’ personality, interests, background and values. This stemmed partly from Liza’s own experience of how difficult it could be to choose a donor based on very limited information.

In 2021, the international healthcare company Medicover acquired SellmerDiers from Liza and the other founder. SellmerDiers later changed its name to Born Donor Bank and is today an independent company outside Diers.

Diers Selected and the work with donor sperm and donor eggs

In 2025, Liza established the sperm bank Diers Selected, which is Diers Fertility Clinic’s own donor sperm service.

At Diers Selected, Liza draws on her background and knowledge from both the fertility and sperm bank fields, as well as her personal experience of choosing a donor.

Diers Selected recruits, selects and screens sperm donors. Thorough donor profiles are prepared and personal guidance is offered, so that future parents have access to relevant information about each donor and a better basis for making their choice.

Diers Selected emphasises openness about the number of families per donor. That is why each donor chooses their own global limit – and it can be no more than 50 families. By comparison, many larger European sperm banks have a global limit of 75 families per donor, if the limit is disclosed at all.

Diers Selected’s egg donor database

In 2026, Diers Fertility Clinic launched an egg donor database for those of the clinic’s patients who need an egg donor.

Here, patients get a unique insight into the egg donors through detailed profiles. At the same time, they have far more say and can take an active part in choosing their egg donor.

MyDonorFamily and donor siblings

Liza helped establish MyDonorFamily, which helps donor-conceived people and their families find and get in touch with genetic half-siblings.

The initiative grew partly out of experiences in Liza’s own family. Since 2025, MyDonorFamily has been part of Diers Klinik ApS.

The work with MyDonorFamily reflects a focus that extends beyond fertility treatment itself. It also covers the questions of identity, genetic relationships, privacy and belonging that can arise later in the lives of donor-conceived families.

Personal experience as a mother of three donor-conceived children

Liza has undergone fertility treatment using donor sperm at Diers Fertility Clinic herself and is the mother of three donor-conceived children.

She therefore understands the process of choosing a sperm donor from both a professional and a personal perspective. Having faced these decisions herself, she is familiar with the questions surrounding a donor’s characteristics, genetic background, openness with donor-conceived children and the possibility of connecting with their genetic half-siblings.

This personal experience has helped shape her work with fertility treatment, donors and donor profiles.

A professional voice in the public debate

Among other things, she has spoken about:

  • access to fertility treatment for single people and LGBTQ+ families
  • fertility discrimination
  • BMI limits and individual assessment
  • patient involvement and reproductive self-determination
  • choice of donor and information about sperm donors
  • the perspectives of donor-conceived people and donor parents
  • egg donation and the recruitment of egg donors

Liza’s public contributions draw on her background as a midwife, her experience as the founder of a clinic and a sperm bank, and her personal experience as the mother of three donor-conceived children.
