Klara and Frieda: From Two to Four After Their Very First Insemination

Sometimes, the journey to parenthood moves faster than you could ever have imagined.

Klara and Frieda first came to us in spring 2025 with their dream of starting a family. Just a few weeks after their initial consultation, they had their first insemination at Diers Fertility Clinic in Denmark.

And that very first attempt would change their lives forever.

Klara became pregnant – and soon, another wonderful surprise was waiting for them. They weren’t expecting just one baby, but two! Today, Klara and Frieda are proud mums to Alfons and Hugo, identical twin boys.

We spoke with them about their journey: their thoughts before starting treatment, why they chose a fertility clinic in Denmark, how they selected their sperm donor, the exciting days surrounding the insemination, and of course, the unforgettable moment they discovered they were expecting twins.

The Dream of Starting a Family Together

Klara and Frieda have been together for 10 years, and they both knew early on that they wanted to have children together. Before starting a family, however, they wanted to finish their studies and enjoy some valuable time together as a couple.

After returning from a big trip in early 2025, they knew the time had finally come to pursue their dream of becoming parents.

Why Choose Fertility Treatment in Denmark?

The couple explored fertility treatment options in Hamburg as well as at Diers Fertility Clinic in Denmark, which had been recommended to them by friends.

One of the reasons they ultimately chose Denmark was that the clinics in Hamburg didn’t feel particularly LGBTQ+ friendly.

For example, they received forms that required information from a male partner, and they were also asked to undergo a psychological assessment because they wanted treatment using donor sperm.

“It just didn’t feel right.”

From the First Consultation to Insemination

Just one month after their initial consultation, Klara and Frieda travelled to Denmark for their first IUI treatment in spring 2025.

After the consultation, they arranged the necessary blood tests and began exploring their sperm donor options.

Their overall approach was simple: Don’t overthink it.

As Frieda explains:

“We somehow figured that overthinking everything beforehand wouldn’t help. It was better to make a decision and just go for it.”

They chose their sperm donor in just one hour, quickly agreeing on the right choice.

“We didn’t want to analyse every little detail because, in the end, there is only so much you can influence. If you have a good gut feeling, things will somehow work out.”

They also decided to go ahead and schedule their first insemination straight away. After all, why put themselves under unnecessary pressure trying to find the perfect moment?

As Klara recalls:

“I just thought, well, it’s probably not going to work on the first try anyway.”

Their First Insemination

When Klara and Frieda arrived at Diers for the first time, they were filled with excitement and anticipation.

“It felt like we were treated as equals. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming and personal.”

“We were incredibly nervous. We weren’t sure whether it was really the right time. But the team made us feel completely understood and supported through all that excitement.”

Despite their nerves, they both remember the treatment itself as a relaxed and positive experience.

Klara also received acupuncture afterwards, which she found particularly pleasant and comforting.

After the treatment, they stopped just around the corner for some fries before getting back into the car and heading home to Hamburg.

And already during the drive home, Klara had a feeling that the treatment had worked.

“Maybe it was just my imagination, but I was somehow immediately certain that it had worked. I could feel that something was happening in my body.”

Two Weeks That Suddenly Felt Very Long

After an insemination, what many people consider the most nerve-racking part of fertility treatment begins: the wait for the pregnancy test.

Frieda could hardly contain her excitement and wanted Klara to take an early pregnancy test as soon as possible.

Klara, however, preferred to wait. She was worried that testing too early might give an unreliable result.

But two days before the scheduled pregnancy test, Frieda finally convinced her to take one.

It was positive!

They were both over the moon and couldn’t have been happier.

And Suddenly, There Were Two!

Finding out that their very first insemination had been successful was already an incredible moment.

But at their second ultrasound appointment, another surprise was waiting for Klara and Frieda: they were expecting identical twins!

“We had an early ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy, and at that appointment, they could only see one baby.”

When they returned for another ultrasound at nine weeks pregnant, the doctor suddenly spotted two tiny beating hearts.

They could hardly believe it.

“We were in complete shock. That first week was just pure shock. It hadn’t even crossed our minds that we might be having twins.”

Alongside the surprise came feelings of fear and concern, especially for Klara.

As a midwife herself, she was well aware of the potential risks associated with twin pregnancies, and her mind immediately went to all the possible complications.

“At first, I couldn’t really allow myself to feel happy about it.”

The Pregnancy

It soon became clear that the babies were identical twins sharing one placenta. Because of this, Klara’s pregnancy was monitored particularly closely.

“We had an ultrasound every two weeks. At first, it wasn’t always enjoyable because we were naturally worried that something might be wrong. We were quite tense during those first few appointments.

But over time, it became part of our routine. And because everything always looked good and was developing perfectly, our anxiety gradually turned into excitement. We started really looking forward to seeing the two of them. It was like going to the cinema every two weeks – and it became such a lovely experience.”

Fortunately, the pregnancy progressed well, without any major complications, something Klara feels incredibly grateful for.

“I really enjoyed being pregnant. I didn’t have many symptoms or discomforts either, which was wonderful. […] I felt really, really good, and I genuinely loved being pregnant.”

Klara had always hoped for a vaginal birth, although she was aware that twin pregnancies often end in a caesarean section.

Together with her medical team, they agreed to induce labour during the 38th week of pregnancy.

And in December 2025, two little boys completed their family: Alfons and Hugo.

“I was so happy and proud that I was able to give birth to both of them vaginally. They were both still relatively small, but they could breathe on their own straight away and stayed with us the entire time.”

Alfons und Hugo Zwillinge

Everything went so well that Klara and Frieda were able to take Alfons and Hugo home just two days after the birth, ready to celebrate their very first Christmas together as a family of four..

Klara and Frieda’s Advice to Others on Their Fertility Journey

“Don’t overthink it. Just go for it.”

That’s Klara and Frieda’s answer when we ask what advice they would give to others hoping to start a family.

After all, you can’t plan everything, and sometimes life simply unfolds in ways you never expected.

And for women and couples who are expecting twins, they have one special message:

“We are so grateful that this happened to us and that we now have two babies at once. Twins are the greatest gift. It’s something truly special, and we feel incredibly lucky.”

Every fertility journey is different. Some take longer than expected, while others bring unexpected surprises. And sometimes, the very first attempt leads to twice the happiness.

Dear Klara and Frieda, thank you so much for sharing your beautiful story with us and with others who are on their own journey to parenthood.

We are incredibly happy to have played a small part in your journey, and we wish you, Alfons and Hugo all the love and happiness in the world as you begin this wonderful new chapter together.
