Screening of sperm donors

The donor sperm we purchase for use in the clinic from Born Donor Bank and Livio Sperm Bank is carefully selected and thoroughly tested.

The same applies to donor sperm from other Danish sperm banks.

Strict requirements to be approved as a sperm donor

All the donors we use in the clinic meet the high Danish standards set by the Danish Patient Safety Authority and the EU Tissue Directive.

Naturally, donors must have exceptional sperm quality. In addition, they are tested for a wide range of infectious and genetic diseases.

Only very few donor applicants make it through the eye of the needle and are approved as donors.

If you choose to purchase the donor sperm through another sperm bank, you should investigate the screening procedures and testing of the donors at that sperm bank yourself.

Residual risk

Even though donors are tested according to strict, high standards, it is impossible to completely eliminate the risk of transmitting infectious or hereditary diseases.

Humans carry thousands of genes, and it is impossible to be certain about which genes we ourselves carry or how they might affect the health of a future child.

Sperm donors are most likely tested and screened for more conditions than you and/or your partner.

Get peace of mind with a GeneMatch test

Sperm banks cannot test donors for all rare genetic mutations. At the same time, the donor only contributes half of the pieces to the genetic puzzle. Your own genes also play an important role.

A GeneMatch test can check if your genes and the donor’s are a good match. This offers extra peace of mind.
