IUI success tips – Our top 10 strategies for success

Preparing your body for IUI treatment

If you’re looking to boost your chances of IUI success, these 10 practical tips can make a significant difference.

1. Eat a balanced and varied diet:

Include fertility-boosting foods like leafy greens, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins in your daily meals.

Try to include 6 portions of vegetables/fruits a day to ensure you get the essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to support reproductive health.

Don’t forget that it’s totally okay to enjoy some chocolate cake or your favourite sweets from time to time. Just keep it balanced and enjoy your treats!

2. Take Folic Acid Supplementation:

The Danish Health Authority recommends a daily intake of 400 micrograms of Folic Acid when planning for pregnancy.

Starting this supplementation three months before your treatment can lower the risk of neural tube defects in your baby.

3. Quit Smoking:

To align with fertility experts’ success tips, it’s vital to eliminate smoking from your life when you wish to achieve pregnancy.

Smoking can impact ovulation and may have adverse effects on the quality of men’s sperm quality. There is also a higher risk of having a miscarriage if you smoke. Furthermore, smoking harms the development of your baby.

The Danish Health Authority advises to quit smoking as soon as you decide to start planning for a baby.

4. Moderate Caffeine and Avoid Alcohol:

When it comes to caffeine and its impact on fertility, the experts are still a bit divided. So, as a precaution, you should consider reducing your caffeine consumption.

However, there’s no need to bid farewell to your beloved morning coffee, or your relaxing cup of afternoon tea. It’s all about keeping it balanced and not exaggerating your caffeine intake.

As for alcohol, the Danish Health Authority advises against alcohol consumption during pregnancy and when trying to conceive naturally.

Alcohol can harm your baby from the start of pregnancy and onwards. As it is
often difficult to know the exact time of conception when you conceive naturally , you should not drink alcohol if you are planning on having a baby.

However, when you undergo insemination treatment you will be able to determine the exact time of conception. So, it’s okay to have an occasional glass of wine or beer in the weeks leading up to your treatment. After the IUI treatment, you should avoid alcohol.

5. Check your Medications:

Consult with your doctor about any medications you’re currently taking when planning your pregnancy as some medications can have a negative impact on your fertility.

It’s essential to determine whether adjustments or discontinuation are necessary before your IUI journey.

6. Stay Active:

Incorporating regular physical activity into your daily routine is one of our best IUI success tips.

Activities like walking, swimming, or yoga can not only improve your overall fitness but also enhance blood circulation, manage stress, and promote reproductive wellness.

7. Maintain a Healthy Weight:

Achieving a healthy weight is important for IUI success. Both being underweight and overweight can affect your chances of success due to hormonal imbalances, irregular ovulation and other factors.

Being overweight

If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 27 or higher, it may negatively affect your fertility, possibly leading to issues like prolonged menstrual cycles. This is due to the hormone system being affected by the fat tissue.

However, it’s important to stress that many women can have a higher BMI without experiencing fertility problems.

At Diers Klinik, we have no specific BMI requirements to initiate treatment if your menstrual cycle is regular. Our experience has not proven that an increased BMI decreases the chances of pregnancy if you have a regular menstrual cycle.

8. Maintain a Relaxed Approach:

Managing stress effectively can promote a positive emotional state and support reproductive health. This is a key component of IUI success tips.

The more confident and relaxed you feel about the course of treatment, the better chances that your body will relax, making it more receptive to treatment.

We understand how challenging it can be to unwind and maintain your calmness on the transformative journey of parenthood, but do the best you can.

We recommend

  • that you continue leading a completely normal everyday life,
  • that you consider incorporating stress-reduction techniques into your daily life, such as deep breathing exercises or mindfulness meditation.

9. Ensure Adequate Sleep:

Strive for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to maintain hormonal balance and overall well-being.

Establishing a relaxing bedtime routine and creating a comfortable sleep environment can significantly contribute to your overall health.

10. Reduce Exposure to Environmental Toxins:

Minimize your exposure to harmful environmental toxins, including household cleaning products and pesticides.

Opt for natural and organic alternatives to reduce potential risks to your reproductive health.
