Questions about insemination treatment (IUI)
What is IUI insemination?
IUI means intrauterine insemination (insemination inside the uterus). This fertility treatment is considered the most simple, mild, and non-invasive method, as IUI is performed in your natural menstrual cycle with no need for hormones or other fertility medication.
IUI treatment is particularly suitable and effective if the treatment is carried out on healthy women with a regular menstrual cycle. The procedure must be carried out at the time of the month where you are most fertile which is close to the time of the ovulation.
During the insemination process, the purified sperm cells are introduced through your cervix directly into the uterus with a thin sterile catheter. Pregnancy then takes place naturally when the sperm fertilises an egg, and the fertilised egg attaches to the lining of your uterus.
A preliminary purification procedure of the sperm washes away the dead and weak sperms cells, leaving only the healthy sperm cells with good motiliy in the sperm sample. At the same time the IUI procedure itself also optimises the chances of fertilisation by significantly shortening the sperm cell’s path to the egg cell.
How long does a treatment take?
You must plan about 1 hour for the insemination procedure with us. This hour includes an ultrasound scan beforehand and about 15 minutes rest after the insemination.
Do I have to take hormones?
We carry out the insemination treatment in your natural menstrual cycle. So, you do not need hormone treatment.
Can I drive after the IUI treatment?
Right after the IUI procedure, we recommend to rest for about 15 minutes to give your body time to relax. Apart from that, you don’t need a lot of rest after the treatment. So, you are welcome to go home after the treatment. It is not a problem to drive, fly or return home by train.
How do I prepare for the IUI treatment?
Before the first treatment, we need blood tests for HIV 1 & 2 and Hepatitis B and C.
We also recommend a check-up at your gynaecologist and a chlamydia swab, but this is not mandatory.
Before you begin treatment with us, we advise you to start monitoring your menstrual cycle.
Read more about how to prepare for IUI treatment.
Does it make sense to have the passage in my fallopian tubes checked before starting treatment?
If you have ever had an infection in the uterus or in the fallopian tubes, we would recommend that you have your fallopian tubes checked. The check, however, is not a mandatory examination.
If you already know that your fallopian tubes are blocked, you should seek IVF treatment straight away.
When should I switch to IVF treatment?
Each course of treatment is individual, and we will be happy to advise you according to your individual situation.
However, if you know that your fallopian tubes are blocked, IUI treatment makes no sense. Read more about our recommendations for the next step in our blog post on the different treatment methods.
Do you help many single women become solo mums in your clinic?
Since founding the clinic in 2006, we have been supporting single women on their way to solo motherhood.
Today, we see more and more single women who choose to take matters into their own hands and fulfil their dreams of becoming mothers in our clinic. Single mothers by choice to be now represent our largest treatment group.
In 2022, around 40% of our new clients were single women.
Is the risk of multiple pregnancy increased with IUI?
With insemination treatment (IUI) in the natural cycle, the risk of a multiple pregnancy is not increased.
Questions about sperm donor choice
Can I choose a sperm donor myself?
The choice of donor is entirely up to you, and in Denmark you can choose both open and closed donors. We would be happy to advise you on your options.
How do I order donor sperm for my treatment?
For your treatment in the Diers Clinic, you can reserve a donor for the insemination directly through us. This is possible for both sperm donors from Born Donor Bank and donors from Livio Sperm Bank. So, you do not have to order donor sperm directly from a sperm bank in advance.
If you would like to secure several donor sperm units for future treatments and/or for genetic siblings, you are also welcome to buy several units from us and store them in a storage.
What should I consider when choosing a sperm donor?
Choosing a donor is a very personal choice, and there is no right or wrong. Whether you want to focus on the external features, the personality or the children’s photos is entirely up to you.
You can choose between open (ID Release) and closed (No ID Release) donors. Donor sperm from closed donors is typically a cheaper option compared to donor sperm from open donors. Read more about the sperm donor categories in this blog post.
We are always happy to guide you and answer any questions you might have.
Which sperm bank can I choose?
It would be easiest and cheapest for you to choose a donor from Born Donor Bank or Livio Sperm Bank.
However, if you have found your desired donor at, for instance, European Sperm Bank or Cryos, you are more than welcome to order sperm units there and have them delivered to us.
Does the donor’s blood type impact on my pregnancy chances?
When choosing a sperm donor, you do not have to consider the blood type of the sperm donor. This does not affect your chances of achieving pregnancy.
What is CMV?
Human cytomegalovirus (known as CMV) is a herpesvirus in the same family as the virus responsible for a disease like chickenpox. As with chickenpox, most people will get infected with CMV at some point in their lives. CMV remains latent in the body where it can be reactivated, or you can get reinfected. It is transmitted through bodily fluids – for instance through kissing or having sex. It is not possible to vaccinate against CMV.
CMV-negative women are at higher risk of contracting the infection during pregnancy. If infected, there is also a small risk that the woman can pass CMV to her baby during pregnancy. This is known as congenital CMV.About one in 200 babies is born with a congenital CMV infection. However, only about one in five babies with congenital CMV infection will be sick from the virus or have long-term health problems.
Even though the risk of contracting CMV from donor sperm is considered extremely low, especially CMV-negative women may prefer sperm from CMV-negative donors, which can be checked at the sperm bank. However, we recommend that you consult with your doctor before deciding whether to include this aspect in your donor choice.
Which treatment method should i choose when ordering donor sperm?
An “IUI, MOT20+” unit is recommended for insemination treatment. We recommend that you ask us first about the availability of a certain sperm donor instead of ordering the donor sperm directly from the sperm bank.
What does ID release mean?
ID Release sperm donors are also called open donors. Having a child with an ID Release donor means that the child can learn the identity of the donor from the age of 18. The donor has no way of knowing the identity of the children.
No ID Release donors are donors who do not wish to be contacted. Therefore, it is not possible for a child of a No ID Release donor to know the identity of the donor.
Read more about the sperm donor categories in this blog post.
Which donor category is chosen most frequently?
In 2022, 65% of all our treatments with donor sperm in Diers Klinik were performed with an ID release donor.
35% of our treatments in the clinic in 2022 were performed with No ID Release donors.
What does Pregnancy Slot mean?
Pregnancy slots are used by the sperm banks to ensure that donors’ pregnancy limits are not exceeded nationally and internationally. If you reserve/buy donor sperm through us, you don’t need to buy a Pregnancy Slot. We will do this for you free of charge.
Can I use the same donor for siblings?
Yes. If you wish to secure a donor for future siblings, it is advisable to purchase units for a storage. You should consider this option at the latest when you are pregnant. Sperm banks cannot guarantee that a donor will be available in 1-2 years.
Questions about planning the insemination treatment
When do I have to come for treatment?
The insemination treatment takes place as close to your ovulation as possible. So, your most important job is to test correctly with ovulation tests to detect your LH surge.
The ovulation tests detect the sharp rise in the level of luteinising hormone (LH) in your urine, which occurs before ovulation. When the ovulation test shows the LH surge, you must come to us within 24-36 hours for the insemination.
How do I get an appointment for the treatment?
You will always be able to get an appointment for the insemination if you have a positive ovulation test. Simply email us before 10am to get an appointment for the same day. The last appointment is at 3pm.
You are welcome to make your way to us before you have received a confirmation. We always schedule you for treatment as soon as we see your email from 9am in the morning. You are also welcome to call us between 9am and 10am to make an appointment.
How do I test with ovulation tests?
It is important that you start taking ovulation tests 2 days before your expected ovulation. During the first consultation, we will explain from which cycle day this would be for you. Feel free to read our detailed explanation of the ovulation tests in this blog post.
If you start testing too late, we cannot guarantee that the time for treatment is optimal.
Which ovulation tests are the best?
We recommend testing with Clearblue (the pink variant) or another stick test with two lines, for instance Boots Ovulation Test Kit or Valmed stick tests. Please do not use strip tests.
Clearblue needs to be done first thing in the morning or in the evening if you haven’t been to the bathroom for 3-4 hours. Please ensure you purchase the pink Clearblue tests (for the 2 most fertile days).
Other stick tests usually are most suitable for the evening or for the second morning urine. Please check the instructions.
Feel free to read our detailed explanation of the ovulation tests in this blog post.
Will I be able to come for treatment if I ovulate on the weekend?
Diers Klinik is open 365 days a year. You are also welcome to come for the insemination treatment at the weekend or on public holidays.
My ovulation test is not positive – what can I do?
Patience, patience, patience
It’s quite normal to have a shift in your menstrual cycle and to experience an ovulation delay when you’re trying to plan.
Sometimes you can also have a cycle without an ovulation. If you want to be sure, you can get an appointment for an ultrasound with us (or with your local gynaecologist).
How long do I have stay in Denmark?
You do not need to plan a longer stay in Denmark in connection with the treatment. We schedule 1 hour for your treatment. So, you can travel to Denmark and back on the same day if you want.
