What fertility treatment options are available if my sperm quality is reduced?
There are several options:
- We know that factors such as a high BMI, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking can negatively affect sperm quality. Lifestyle changes that improve these factors are therefore recommended.
- Daily vitamin supplements, including a multivitamin containing folic acid, Omega-3 (1000 mg), Q10 (100 mg), and a vitamin D supplement if your blood test shows low vitamin D levels.
- If a hormonal imbalance is causing reduced sperm quality, hormone treatment may improve sperm production. This requires specialist assessment and treatment.
- If sperm quality is significantly reduced, ICSI treatment may be an option. With ICSI, a single sperm cell is injected directly into the egg.
- If no sperm cells are found in the semen sample (azoospermia), sperm may be surgically retrieved from the testicles or epididymis (TESE or TESA) and used for ICSI.
- If sperm quality is very low, donor sperm may also be used. Donor sperm can be used for both IUI and IVF treatment.
